Fall Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist for Long-Haul Truckers

Key takeaways

  • Battery cold-cranking amps drop 30–50% in winter — test now and replace marginal units
  • Diesel gels below ~15°F without anti-gel additive; switch to winter blend in October
  • Tire tread below 4/32" on steers fails DOT and is dangerous on wet leaves
  • Air dryer cartridge replacement now prevents brake-line freeze-ups in December

Batteries and Electrical System

Cold weather is brutal on batteries. Have each battery load-tested in fall, not in January when you're sleeping in a dead cab. Clean terminals, check cable tightness, and replace any battery older than four years or testing below 80% capacity. A new battery in October costs $200; a tow at 2 AM in January costs much more.

Fluids and Fuel System

Switch to winter-blend diesel or add anti-gel additive before temps drop below 20°F at night. Check engine coolant freeze point (should protect to −34°F), top off DEF, and inspect for leaks at the water pump and radiator hoses. Replace the fuel/water separator filter and drain any accumulated water.

Tires, Brakes, and Air System

Steer tires below 4/32" of tread fail DOT and are dangerous on wet leaves and early ice. Walk around and inspect sidewalls for cuts and bulges. Inspect brake chambers, slack adjusters, and pad thickness. Replace the air dryer cartridge every year — a saturated cartridge dumps water into the air system, freezing brake lines on the first cold morning.

Cab Heat, Wipers, and Lighting

Run the cab heater to full on a 60°F day — if it doesn't blow hot, fix it now. Replace wiper blades (every six months is right), top off washer fluid with winter-rated formula, and walk the truck checking every marker, brake, and turn light. Days are getting shorter and the first hour of every shift now happens in the dark.
